Are We Prepared?: Practical Skills in High School People are taught many things in school, but according to Dave from Boyinaband, â€Å"I was never taught how to vote. They devoted that time to defining isotopes. I wasn’t taught how to look after my health, but mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell†(Boyinaband, â€Å"Don’t Stay In School†). This is just one line from the YouTube video hit â€Å"Don’t Stay in School†. With 4,984,295 views people are starting to discussed what their education is preparing them for. Is NC education preparing us for life? NC public schools should require practical skill class in high school because students are not equipped with life skills after graduation like basic finances, state laws, and basic health skills. What are basic skills? Basic skills or practical skills are the skills need to survive basic society. This includes but is not limited to how to get a job, pay tax, vote, look after your health and basic first aid, present day practical medicines, how to recognize diseases with preventable causes, the state laws and human rights, the political system, which policies exist, and how to make policies change, how to budget and disburse earnings, how much it costs to raise a kid, how to buy a house with a mortgage, and trading stocks. Most public schools do not teach these skills and if they do they are extracurricular classes that are not required.
